BIM model on a construction site

With each new release of Revit, the underlying .RVT file format also changes as new features and functionality are added.

But before going ahead with a large-scale rollout of a new version of a program that involves a one-way conversion of a previous .RVT version, most companies perform due diligence to ensure that it won't cause any problems in their current projects.

So, when upgrading Revit 2023 to Revit 2024, some companies unfortunately encountered conflicts of storage templates (class "Schema"), leading to damage to the updated files.

Description of the problem and its causes
When attempting to load a file, the user would see a "Schema Conflict" dialog box, asking them to either not load the file or continue working. If they chose the latter option, the file could be corrupted and the model components could be erased.

This error occurred in various scenarios: Opening a project (.RVT); Loading a linked model; Opening a template (.RTE); Loading a family (.RFA). The issue affected the four previous 2024 versions (Revit 2024.0, 2024.0.1, 2024.0.2, and 2024.1), but was fixed in 2024.1.1, which was released on September 6, 2023.

In the current version 24.2.0.63, compatible with previous versions 2024.1.1, 2024.2 and 2024.1.1, the problem is also fixed:

“This update resolves an issue with storage templates that affects extensions and projects upgraded to Revit 2024. Version 2024.2 is compatible with the previous update 2024.1.1. Versions 2024.2 and 2024.1.1 can be used simultaneously,” the update notes read.

The error was most likely caused by a change in the address of element identification codes in Revit 2024: the "ElementId" class moved from storing 32-bit integers to storing 64-bit values.

How companies resolve conflicts that arise
Those companies that launch new projects in 2024 and do not need to migrate data are not affected phone numbers in kuwait by the issue and most likely do not notice it. As well as those that install a specific version of Revit for the life of the project.

However, even after the issue was fixed in the latest releases, it may still be encountered by organizations that collaborate on projects with multiple third-party users or companies with different versions of Revit 2024. For example, some users have encountered corruption of .RVT files that third-party project participants with older versions of Revit stored in Autodesk BIM 360 and Autodesk Construction Cloud.

In connection with this fact, in the notes for the Revit 2024 update, released in January 2024, the developers added a warning:

"Collaborators should consider the 2024.1.1 and 2024.2 updates. All team members should use these or newer versions of Revit. This will prevent a possible reoccurrence of the storage template issue for models created in versions prior to Revit 2024.1.1."

With Revit 2024 more than halfway through its annual update cycle, Autodesk has informed affected customers that the company cannot provide support for any data corruption caused by using older versions of the product to update RVT files.

The reason for this decision was the potential for a hard reset of .RVT, which would lead to both a conflict with files created in previous point releases of Revit 2024, and to general internal incompatibility of the program with its previous versions. However, Autodesk representatives also promised that this will be fixed after the release of Revit 2025. This will cause a lot of headaches for those who prefer to migrate projects as new releases are released.

Due to the current situation, some users who have encountered the "Schema" class issue report that they will continue to use Revit 2023 for current tasks and will switch to Revit 2024 only for new projects. Others admit that they will abandon Revit 2024 completely and wait for Revit 2025.
